Chalk Fabric Travel Chalkboard

Project Sheet: cd1212

Materials

• 1/3 yd chalk cloth
• ½ yd fabric
• 1/3 yd warm and natural
• Spool of ribbon
• Thread

Notes:
• Use 1/2” seam allowance
• Use clothespins or binder clips to pin fabrics together
• If you get crinkles in your chalkboard while turning the project right side out, use a blow dryer to apply heat and they will become less visible.

Directions

If using a directional pattern, make sure to visualize the design before cutting.
1. Cut:
     a. From Chalk Cloth: 10x12”
     b. From cotton:
         -Two pieces to 2x12”
         -One piece 12.5x2”
         -One piece 12.5x6”
         -Two pieces 6x4”
         -One piece 12.5x18”
     c. From warm and natural: 12.5x18”
     d. From ribbon: 18”
2. With right sides together, sew the 2x12” pieces to the top and bottom of the chalk cloth.
3. With right sides together, sew the 12.5x2” piece to the left side of the chalk cloth.
4. With right sides together, sew the 12.5x6” piece to the right side of the chalk cloth.
5. Take your 6x4” pieces and fold in half with the right sides together so they measure 3x4”. Sew down the 3” sides, back stitching at each end. Turn right side out. Fold the open side in ¼” and pin. These will be the pockets for your chalk.
6. Sew down your pockets by stitching around 3 sides of the pocket down. The piece that you just turned in ¼” and pinned should be on the bottom of the pocket. This will be sewn closed when you stitch around the three sides.
7. To create dividers in the pockets, sew a vertical line from the top to the bottom of the pocket.
8. To sew it all together, start by placing the warm and natural on the table. Put the back of the project (the piece without the chalkboard) facing right side up on the warm and natural.
9. Loop your ribbon in half, and place it so the loop marking the halfway point is off the fabric on the left side and the loose strands are laying on top of the fabric. Pin the fabric so it is centered vertically along the left side.
10. Place the chalkboard piece right side down on the top of the ribbon and backing.
11. Sew around all four sides, leaving a 6” gap open on one side (not the side with the ribbon).
12. Using the gap you left, turn your project right side out. You may want to apply heat by blow drying the chalkboard area before turning it right side out. This will make the chalkboard more flexible.
13. Top stitch around the entire project, making sure to completely close the 6”gap.
14. Put chalk in the pockets and enjoy!
